Precautions before the use of trenchless horizontal drill pipes and their later maintenance and upkeep
1. Thread grease and cleaning
Use the correct thread grease: Generally, copper-based thread grease is used;
Before applying thread grease, clean the threads: Before applying new thread grease, thoroughly clean any debris, sand, soil, rust or old thread grease on the threads (pay special attention to observing between the female threads and at the root).
Before making the connection, apply thread grease to the threads to ensure proper lubrication and prevent wear or jamming.
Store the thread grease properly: Keep the thread grease in a sealed container and avoid extreme temperatures affecting its viscosity.
2. Correct fastening and unfastening
Correct alignment of threads: Before the upper thread connection, ensure that the male thread and the female thread are correctly aligned. Avoid misalignment, otherwise the thread will be damaged. Check that the threads of other drill tools used in conjunction are consistent with those of the drill pipe, and ensure that the threads of the mating thread are intact. If there are damaged drill pipes or drill tools with sticky threads, they must not be used; otherwise, the threads of the good drill pipe will be damaged.
Apply the correct torque: Use calibrated torque equipment (such as a hydraulic gauge display or hydraulic pliers), and ensure that the correct torque force is applied during the threading and unthreading process (the torque range is within the drill pipe usage range data). Avoid over-tightening, otherwise the thread will be damaged.
Use low-speed unscrewing: When initially unscrewing the threads, use low-speed rotation to ensure correct engagement of the threads. After the threads mesh correctly, gradually increase the speed.
Inspect the drill rig's vise tooth block: Ensure that the teeth of the tooth block are intact. If there are flat teeth, replace the tooth block in time to avoid slipping and scratching the drill pipe joint, as well as incomplete threaded connection.
High-temperature heating of the joint thread shackle is prohibited: Using heating to loosen the joint may damage the thread and reduce its strength.
3. Handling and storage
Protect the threads during handling: Clean the drill pipe for storage, apply thread grease to the threads, and use thread guards to protect the threads from damage during handling, storage and transportation.
Avoid dropping or impact: Handle the drill pipe with care to prevent it from dropping or colliding, as this may damage the threads.
Properly store drill pipes: Keep the drill pipes in a dry area, support them at the bottom, and do not place heavy objects on top to avoid deformation due to gravity.
4. Inspection and maintenance
Regularly inspect the threads: Regularly check the drill pipe threads for any signs of damage, wear or corrosion.
Timely handling of damage: If any damage is found, assess the repair or replacement of the damaged drill pipe. Under the assessment of the repair value, the thread can be repaired at its original location or displaced and reprocessed for repair.
Follow the manufacturer's recommendations: Always adhere to the manufacturer's recommendations regarding thread oil, torque values, bending radii, and other procedures.
Use the right tools: Use the correct tools for connection and disassembly, and ensure they are properly maintained.
